According to ancient Korean legend, Hwang Chang-Nang became famous for his ability to dance with a sword in each hand during the Silla period. Because of the grace and beauty of his dancing, Hwang was invited to dance before the enemy Baekje king. In the middle of his sword dance, Hwang moved close enough to the enemy king to kill him with one thrust of his sword. Although he was executed, the people of Silla revered Hwang as a patriot, and began to imitate his sword dance while wearing a mask that resembled the fallen hero. Through the years, the fighting swords were replaced with dancing swords, or modern Korean dancing knives. Originally a lively and animated dance for Korean men, the Korean sword dance has been transformed over the years into a graceful and feminine dance performed by Korean women.
